What makes music soothing?

What is it in music that makes for good listening, and, at a higher plane, for soulful relaxing. Perhaps its "naad", a sanskrit word meaning "origin of sound", which generates this experience of sound, thus words, and thus songs - giving human existence an exalted position in universe. Perhaps its because music has rhythm, a flow, which helps human atoms synchronise itself with his/ her surroundings. Like a magnet helping electorns in iron bar straigtening themselves, giving them power hitherto unknown to them to attract metal henceforth. Music does it with our heart....... giving a sense of belonging to otherwise chaotic and unattached existence.
Just watched "Music and Lyrics " starring Barrymore and Grant. Genre was musical, but what I loved was the way words unfolded the story, in themselves evolving but helping the progression in an easy flowing manner. And, at the end was the question that i asked at the start of this piece - What is it in music that makes for good listening, and, at a higher plane, for soulful relaxing.

Hey Anshul,

Don't know what makes music soothing but, one thing is for sure, it does give a sense of belonging, like you mentioned.

And, some lyrics are SO beautiful & meaningful that you often think, "Now, why couldn't I think of this?"

Me wanna watch "Music & Lyrics" too...

I hope tum is baat mein yaqeen rakhte hoge Anshul ki har insaan ke aas paas ek wave hiti hai(hum jise aura kahte hain).
Sangeet mein har sur koi na koi wave banata hai.kabhi socha hai ki alag alag logon ko alag alag gaane kyun pasand aate hain?? har insaan ka ek alag fav music director!! kyun??
wajah hai iski..har gaana kisi na kis raag par aadhaarit hota hai..thoda ya zyada...aur har raag ke apne kuchh khaas sur hote hain..jise hum 'Pakad' kahte hain..jis insaan ke aura se jo bhi "Pakad" match hui..woh fav ho jata hai..sukoon pahunchata hai...

Indian aur westorn music mein ek fark hai..sun kar hi samajh jaate hain hum..
Do suron ke beech bhi bahut sur hote hain.Bhaartiya sangeet mein 'Half Note' Quarter note, even 'Half Quarter note' bhi ho sakta hai.inhein "Shrutiyaan" kahte hain.jab hum ek sur se doosre sur par jaate hain to beech ke saare suron ko lete hue jate hain..jise MEED lena kahte hain..
Westorn music mein half notes hote to hain..magar ek sur se doosre sur tak jaane ke liye inka prayog nahin karte balki directly ek sur se doosre sur par jaate hain(just listen to"I dont know why.I just love to see u cry", u ke baad cry achanak aata hai,u can feel it)
ab kabhi aia hota hai ki koi khaas sur nahin magar kuchh shrutiyan match kar jaati hain humse..aur geet soothing lagne lagta hai..kabhi kabhi shrutiyaan achhi nahin lagti.aise mein westorn music achha lagta hai!!

itni hi samajh hai meri...baht lecture pila diya :)
